Nitrogen fixation and growth response of Alnus rubra amended with low and high metal content biosolids Scientia Agricola
Gaulke,Linda S.; Henry,Charles L.; Brown,Sally L..
Forest application of biosolids offers a potential environmentally friendly alternative to landfilling. This two-year investigation was designed to analyze the effects of elevated soil metal concentration resulting from the land application of biosolids on the symbiotic, nitrogen (N) fixing relationship between Alnus rubra Bong. (red alder) and Frankia. High metal biosolids and a modern-day composted biosolid applied at high loading rates of 250, 500, and 1000 Mg ha-1, were used to represent a worst-case scenario for metal contamination. The high metal biosolids were obtained before the current regulations were formulated and had been lagooned prior to use in this study. Total cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in the high metal biosolids were 45, 958,...

Opiatergic participation in the thirst-inhibiting effect of acute third ventricle injections of cadmium (Cd2+) and lead (Pb2+) BJMBR
De-Castro-e-Silva,E.; Luz,C.P.; Sarmento,C.; Nascimento,T.; Gonzalez,V.; Marinho,C.A.; Castro,L.; Oliveira,P.; Santana Jr.,P.; De-Oliveira,I.R.; De-Paula,S.; Lima,A.K.S.; Fregoneze,J.B..
We have previously demonstrated that acute third ventricle injections of both lead and cadmium prevent the dipsogenic response elicited by dehydration or by central injections of dipsogenic agents such as angiotensin II, carbachol and isoproterenol in rats. We have also shown that the antidipsogenic action of cadmium may be due, at least in part, to activation of thirst-inhibitory central serotonergic pathways. In the present paper we show that in Wistar male rats the antidipsogenic effect of both lead acetate (3.0 nmol/rat) and cadmium chloride (3.0 nmol/rat) may be partially dependent on the activation of brain opiatergic pathways since central injections of naloxone (82.5 nmol/rat), a non-selective opioid antagonist, blunt the thirst-inhibiting effect...

Positive effects of Green Tea on hepatic dysfunction, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defence depletion induced by cadmium Biol. Res.
HAMDEN,KHALED; CARREA U,SERGE; AYADI MARKI,FATMA; MASMOUDI,HATEM; EL FEKI,ABDELFATTAH.
Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic environmental and industrial cumulative pollutant that affeets many organs, especially the liver. The present study was designed to evalúate the antioxidant effect of green tea on cadmium-induced hepatic dysfunction and oxidative stress in rats. Adult male Wistar rats were administered cadmium by injection of 20 emoles /kg bw/ every 3 days for six months. This study revealed significant (p < 0.05) liver dysfunction, lipid peroxidation and a decline in antioxidant enzyme activities in the liver of cadmium-treated rats compared to control animáis. Compared to control rats, the activities of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), gammaglutamyl transferase (GGT), acid phosphatase (PAC), phosphatase alkaline (PAL), as well as bilirubin...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa KUCd1, a possible candidate for cadmium bioremediation BJM
Sinha,Sangram; Mukherjee,Samir Kumar.
A cadmium (8 mM) resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain KUCd1 exhibiting high Cd accumulation under in vitro aerobic condition has been reported. The isolate showed a significant ability to remove more than 75% and 89% of the soluble cadmium during the active growth phase from the growth medium and from Cd-amended industrial wastewater under growth supportive condition. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) suggest the presence of Cd in the cells from mid-stationary phase. The cell fractionation study revealed membrane and periplasm to be the major accumulating site in this strain. The chemical nature of the accumulated Cd was studied by X-ray powder diffraction analysis.

Quantifying diet-borne metal uptake in Gammarus pulex using stable isotope tracers ArchiMer
Pellet, Bastien; Ayrault, Sophie; Tusseau-vuillemin, Marie-helene; Gourlay-france, Catherine.
Gammarids are aquatic amphipods widely used for water quality monitoring. To investigate the copper and cadmium diet-borne metal uptake in Gammarus pulex, we adapted the pulse-chase stable isotopes-based approach to determine the food ingestion rate (IR), the gut retention time (GRT) and the metal assimilation efficiencies (AE). G. pulex were fed with 65Cu-, 106Cd-, and 53Cr-labeled alder leaves for 7.5 h and then with unlabeled leaves for 5 d. The metal stable isotope contents in the gammarids, leaves, filtered water and periodically collected feces were determined. Chromium was poorly assimilated by the gammarids; thus, Cr was used as an unassimilated tracer. The first tracer defecation occurred before the first feces harvest, indicating a gut passage...

Radiochemical study of Cd , Co and Eu coprecipitation with Iron Hydroxide in seawater OMA
Chakravorty, R.; Van Grieken, R..
The coprecipitation of Cd, Co and Eu from seawater onto ferric hydroxide was studied, using the radioactive tracers 109Cd, 60Co and 152-154Eu, as a function of the pH, the concentration of the collector iron, the concentration of the metal spike and the aging of the internally formed precipitate. For preconcentration purpose, a pH 9 and a 35 ppm iron concentration appeared to be suitable. At pH 8, the natural pH of seawater, the distribution coefficients for Cd, Co and Eu are 104.5, 105 and 107, respectively.

This study was designed to identify in the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, used as a bio-accumulator, molecular biomarkers for the presence of heavy metals in the lagoon environment. Pearl oysters were exposed to 2 concentrations (1 and 10 μg L− 1) of cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) compared to a control. Twelve target genes encoding proteins potentially involved in the response to heavy metal contamination with antioxidant, detoxification or apoptosis activities were selected. P. margaritifera accumulated Cd but not Cr, and mortality was related to the amount of Cd accumulated in tissues. In response to Cd-Cr contamination, metallothionein (MT) was significantly up-regulated by Cd-Cr at both concentrations, while 7 others (SOD, CAT, GPX, GSTO, GSTM,...

Rôle des particules sur le comportement et la spéciation de métaux traces: exemple du cadmium ArchiMer
Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Dange, Catherine.
The role of particles in the fate and speciation of trace metals in macrotidal estuaries was studied using a surface complexation model (MOCO). Cadmium was selected as the target metal contaminant due to its reactivity in estuaries: cadmium behavior is mainly controlled by heterogeneous processes (sorption/desorption) related to salinity and suspended matter gradients.Various scenarios of suspended matter distribution according to salinity were simulated. The impact of surface properties (specific surface area, density of surface sites, acidity instrinsic properties and complexation constant) was evaluated using data collected on particles from the Gironde, Loire and Seine estuaries.

Seasonal concentrations of some heavy metals in muscle tissues of Siganus rivulatus and Sargus sargus fish from El-mex bay and eastern harbour, Alexandria, Egypt OceanDocs
Khaled, A..
The concentration of seven heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) were detected seasonally in muscle tissues of two fish species (Siganus rivulatus, Sargus sargus) collected from El-Mex Bay and Eastern Harbour. In both species, levels of the seven metals were significantly higher in summer compared with other seasons. The concentrations of such metals decreased in the order Fe > Zn > Cu > Ni ≥ Pb > Mn > Cd. The metal pollution index (MPI) for the two species fluctuated between 0.9 and 1.8 in El-Mex and Eastern Harbour. Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) demonstrates that the concentration of the metals (Cd, Cu and Pb) in the muscle of Siganus rivulatus and Sargus sargus from El-Mex Bay and Eastern Harbour are much lower than...

Silicon-mediated alleviation of Cadmium toxicity on Tujopsis dolabrata Phyton
Huang,YC; Chen,H; Zhao,WJ; Li,WD; Yang,HY; Sun,Y; Wang,L; Cao,SH.
We conducted pot experiments on the cypress Thujopsis dolabrata (Linn. f.) Sieb. et Zucc. in order to study the interaction of silicon (Si) and root exudates on cadmium (Cd) bioavailability in the rhizosphere,. Each variety was planted with 100 mg/kg Cd and/or 400 mg/kg Si for 210 days. The results showed that adding Si increased Cd tolerance in T. dolabrata, but that the mechanism was specifical. In T. dolabrata, Si did not prevent Cd translocation from roots to shoots, and it significantly enhanced Cd accumulation without inhibiting growth. Moreover, Si mobilized Cd from the rhizospheric soil by stimulating phenolic exudation from the roots, suggesting that Cd-chelation combined with Si-induced phenolics were involved in Cd detoxification.

Spéciation des contaminants métalliques en milieu estuarien : Intérêt de la modélisation et application au cadmium ArchiMer
Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Dange, Catherine; Thouvenin, Benedicte.
In estuarine environment, cadmium has a nonconservative behavior. It can be present under various species: dissolved (mineral and organic complexes), colloidal and particulate forms (adsorbed, precipitated), or integrated by various mechanisms in the organisms. This distribution is the result of processes (physical, chemical and biological) which are controlled by many factors (salinity, pH, Eh, nature and concentration of suspended matter, primary production). Geochemical modeling is a very useful approach to understand the dynamics of this type of contaminant, especially in the complex systems which are the estuaries. A speciation model was used to simulate the measurements taken (dissolved and particulate Cd) during various cruises carried out in the...

Transmission Electron Microscopy Study of the Neonatal Rat Tongue Mucosa Treated with Special Attention to the Bacteriae on the Epithelial Cell Membrane International Journal of Morphology
Picoli,Lara Cristina; Lopes,Ruberval A; Semprini,Marisa; Sala,Miguel Angel; Ogawa,Koichi; Watanabe,Ii-sei.
The epithelial cell surfaces of neonatal Wistar rat tongue mucosa were examined by transmission electron microscopic method. The tissues were fixed by modified Karnovksy solution and embedded in Spurr resin. Thin sections of 90 nm thickness were cut and examined in the Jeol 1010 transmission electron microscopy. It was revealed that the queratinized squamous epithelial cells of the tongue mucosa exposed to cadmium presented groupings of numerous bacteriae which are attached to the flat cell membrane surfaces. The coccus and bacillus are attached to the cell membrane in organized rows or at random, as clearly seen in the TEM images. At high magnification, the transmission electron microscopic images showed that bacteriae are attached by a fibrillar...

Uptake and translocation of Cd and Zn in two lettuce cultivars Anais da ABC (AABC)
FONTES,RENILDES L.F.; PEREIRA,JULIANA M.N.; NEVES,JULIO C.L..
Excess of heavy metals in agricultural soils is a matter of concern since it may decrease economic yield as a result of toxicity and lower product quality as a result of metal accumulation in edible plant parts. Among plant species and among cultivars within species a natural variation in uptake, translocation and distribution of trace elements occur. The transference of Cd and Zn, from soil to two lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivars grown in greenhouse, was evaluated in separate experiments for Cd and Zn.Plant dry and fresh matter yield and plant Cd and Zn concentrations were determined. Cultivar CRV showed greater potential for yield than CMM in both experiments. Cadmium and Zn translocation from roots to shoots increased with the increase of soil Cd...

Uptake of cadmium by Pseudokirchneriella supcapitata BABT
Casiraghi,Magela Paula; Luporini,Samuel; Silva,Eduardo Mendes da.
In this work the microalgae Pseudokirchneriella supcapitata was used for the removal of the cadmium in liquids. The accumulations of metal ions by the alga occur in two stages: a very fast absorption (passive adsorption) proceeded by a slower absorption (activate absorption). A mathematical model based on the surface absorption and on the transport into the interior of the cellular membrane was developed. The simulation model kinetic parameters were experimentally obtained. Through the results observed, the mathematical model was shown to be suitable when compared to the experimental results, confirming the validation of the mathematical model.
